Mr Elrasheid Kheirelseid

Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon at
Beaumont Hospital, Dublin

Mr Rasheid graduated from the University of Khartoum in Sudan in 2000 before relocating to Ireland for further surgical training. During his training, he received the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI) scholarship for his PhD thesis at University of Galway. After completing his higher surgical training in General & Vascular Surgery in Ireland, he did a fellowship in peripheral intervention for occlusive arterial disease and diabetic foot management from King’s College Hospital, London. He was appointed as Consultant in Beaumont in 2017 and takes a special interest in ultra-distal bypasses for diabetic foot disease. He works tirelessly for his patients and is an inspiring mentor for the trainees rotating through the unit. He designed the first Beaumont Multidisciplinary Diabetic Foot Meeting to improve collaboration across the diverse team of healthcare professional involved in diabetic foot care in Ireland with the goal of improving outcomes for patients

Dr Chris Manu

Consultant Diabetologist and Clinical Lead for the Diabetic Foot Service at King’s College Hospital & Diabetes UK Clinical Champion 2020-2022

Chris has been a Consultant at King’s since 2016, current clinical lead for the Diabetic Foot Service. Co-lead the setting up of the South East London (SEL) MDfT Network via the NHS Transformation fund. He is the Clinical Lead for their Amputation Root Cause Analysis. He has research interest in peripheral arterial disease and has undertaken an MD on vascular risk stratification of people presenting with foot complications.

In his role as Diabetes UK Clinical Champion, Chris led on developing an improved access to diabetic foot surgical procedures. A problem that has become even more critical post COVID-19 pandemic, thus aiming to deliver a prompt “one-stop” assessment and “day-case” surgical procedures within a clinic setting to improve on waiting list, avoid hospital admissions, and decrease hospital length of stay.

Ms Maureen Bates

Podiatry Manager at the Mike Edmonds Foot Unit, King’s College Hospital, London

Maureen graduated as a podiatrist from University of Glasgow in 1989. She joined the Diabetic Foot Team at King’s College Hospital in 1997 and became the podiatry manager in 2004. She has lead the podiatry team at King’s for almost 20 years and believes strongly in the podiatric role within the multidisciplinary team for the management and treatment of patients with diabetic foot complications. Since joining King’s, Maureen has been actively involved in case-based clinical teaching and demonstration of podiatric techniques, including sharp wound debridement, assessing and managing complex foot problems and advanced wound therapy. She has taught many students, as well as national and international visiting healthcare professionals (doctors, surgeons, nurses, orthotists). Maureen set up and organised the King’s casting course programme which has been running successfully since 2000. Maureen is a member of the Executive Committee of the Diabetic Foot Study Group (2015-2021). She is regularly invited to lecture on the Diabetic Foot Module of the Society of Podiatrists as well as to esteemed multidisciplinary conferences and meetings both nationally and internationally.

Prof Venu Kavarthapu

Consultant Foot & ankle Surgeon at King’s College Hospital, London - Orthopaedic lead for the mike edmonds’ foot unit

Prof Kavarthapu has worked as a Consultant Foot & Ankle Surgeon at King’s College Hospital London since 2006 and is currently the Orthopaedic Lead at the Edmonds’ Foot Unit. He is regional lead for the Young Adult Hip Surgery Service. He is an associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark and Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London. He is a committed educator and is currently the Training Programme Director for Trauma & Orthopaedics South-East London Deanery. He has a strong academic background, publishing 13 book chapters and over 50 peer-reviewed papers. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Trauma.

He is a member of Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland Special Interest Group on Diabetic Foot. He is the immediate Past-President of the International Association of Diabetic Foot Surgeons. In 2022, he won the DEAR (Diabetes Education Awareness and Research) Lifetime Achievement Award in Diabetic Foot Care.

Mr Hani Slim

Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon, King’s College Hospital London

Mr Slim has worked as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon in King’s College Hospital since 2009. He is currently the lead for Vascular Research & Development for the King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust. He has a special interest in complex limb revascularization and bypasses, especially in diabetic and renal failure patients. He has published extensively on this topic and is often asked to speak and chair at national and international MDT meetings highlighting diabetic foot care

Prof Diarmuid Smith

Consultant in Endocrinology & Internal Medicine at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin

Professor Smith graduated from UCD in 1994. He completed his MD thesis research in King’s College London under the supervision of Professor Stephanie Amiel. He was appointed to Beaumont Hospital as a Consultant Endocrinologist in 2005. From 2011-2023 he was the HSE National Clinical Lead for Diabetes and is the current chair of the RCPI national Clinical Advisory Group for diabetes. He has also published over 130 papers in peer reviewed journal on diabetes and endocrinology.

dr eoghan de barra

Consultant in Infectious Diseases & General Internal Medicine, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin

Dr de Barra received his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin and proceeded to gain specialist training in Infectious Diseases and General Medicine in Ireland and South Africa. In 2011 he took a post as Research Fellow and Lecturer in the department of Tropical Medicine and International Health at the RCSI and conducted malaria vaccine research work in Dublin and at the University of Oxford, UK. 

In 2014 he took up a post at Imperial College NHS Trust, London as a Consultant in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine, where he was the clinical lead for the OPAT programme, a site lead for Neuro-Infection, a regional lead for TB including large numbers of MDR TB and led the Trust’s Ebola response, as well as directing and advising Infection Prevention and Control practitioners as part of an integrated Clinical Infection unit. He served as a supervisor for joint Microbiology, Virology, Infectious Diseases and General Medicine trainees on RCPath and JRCPTB schemes, and for Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Pharmacist independent prescribing candidates. 

In 2017 he returned to Dublin taking up a post as Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Senior Lecturer at Beaumont Hospital / RCSI.  Research interests include Tropical Medicine, vaccine development, TB, resource limited acute care, OPAT and antimicrobial prescribing.

Ms Hilary hurley

Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon, St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin

Ms Hurley graduated from University College Dublin and completed her higher surgical training in Ireland. She was appointed as Consultant Vascular Surgeon in St Vincent’s University Hospital in 2021. She is heavily involved in surgical education, both at the undergraduate level within UCD, and in the post-graduate teaching of vascular trainees, many of whom have benefited from her mentorship. During her own specialist training, she was heavily involved in the development of the St Vincent’s Hospital multidisciplinary acute diabetic foot pathway. The team recently published on the impact of this systems change, reducing both costs and amputation rates despite a higher patient throughput

prof mick lee

Consultant Intervention Radiologist, Bons Secours Hospital Dublin & Beaumont Hospital, Dublin (ret)

Prof Michael Lee is a Consultant Interventional Radiologist and was a champion of the Beaumont IR department before his retirement in 2022. He graduated from UCD in 1982 and commenced his radiology training in the Mater Hospital. He undertook a fellowship in abdominal imaging and interventional radiology in Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, after which he was appointed as a consultant radiologist and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. He returned to Ireland and worked as a consultant interventional radiologist in Beaumont Hospital for almost thirty years. Upon his retirement in 2022, he was appointed a Professor Emeritus of the Royal College of Surgeons in recognition of his incredible career and contribution to Irish medicine.

He has held innumerable leadership positions on international expert committees, including the president of CIRSE (2011-13) and president of UEMS IR Division (2018-present). He was elected to the Faculty of Radiologists in 2018. Notably, he was the founding member and first President of Irish Society of Interventional Radiology (1996-1998) and currently is the National Programme Lead for IR. He has sat on multiple editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals, has published 280 peer-reviewed papers and has written nine textbooks. He was the recipient of the Gold Medal from the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe in 2016 and from the British Society of Interventional Radiology in 2018.
